More About Ryan and his Family

Ryan Manso Zajac lives in Fairmont City Illinois and has Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. Muscular Dystrophies are genetic disorders characterized by progressive muscle wasting and weakness that begins with microscopic changes is the muscle. This deterioration affects every muscle in the body eventually destroys the respiratory and heart muscles. This form of dystrophy is exclusive to boys and the average life span is 17 to 25 years.

Ryan was diagnosed at age 7 and was in a wheel chair by 12. Ryan is 16 now and is facing the phase of the disease affecting the spine. Scoliosis is a side affect of being in the wheel chair and interferes with sitting, sleeping, and even breathing. Ryan will be undergoing surgery on June 17, 2009. The doctors will be inserting a rod in his spine in an attempt to straighten him up. This should help relieve the pressure on his internal organs.

Ryan and his mom, Becky Manso are facing a major life change. Recovery from this surgery is expected to be as long as 5 weeks. He will require a different wheel chair and will have after to adjust to a more limited range of motion.

New equipment will be required to make transferring possible in his future. The only available equipment through the insurance or MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) is a Hoyer Lift. The lift is rather cumbersome and his house rather small. Alternative lift equipment is available that mounts to the ceiling on a track. This equipment would make it easier on Ryan, his mom and supporting care givers. Due to extensive steroid treatment common to the disease the boys can get heavy. Ryan weighs about 225 pounds and is unable to support himself at all.

Ryan has a very supportive Manso family, first and foremost his dedicated mom Becky, his grandma Ruth, his Uncles; Pepe and Kevin and his Aunts; Karen, Toni, Carla and Christy. Kevin Manso was a player and member of Sunday Morning Rugby Club for many years and still attends club events when he is able. This equipment is not covered by insurance and is very expensive. The whole group could use some help lessoning the financial burden.

There is no cure for this disease. Ryan is a straight A student with a lot to share. It is important to him and his family that he be as comfortable and happy as possible while hope continues for a cure to this merciless disease. All the help and support for this cause is very much appreciated.

SMRC Golf Classic 2008

The Sunday Morning Rugby Club held the 18th Annual Pete Donahue Memorial Golf Tournament June 21, 2008 at the Prairies of Cahokia Golf Course were over 140 golfers braved the brief stormy weather and everyone managed to complete the course.

The South Side Day Nursery Learning Center, a program of SSDN was chosen as the recipient of the funds raised by the tournament. In eleven years we have contributed over $70,000 to the Nursery Learning Center and they have put it to great use, purchasing playground and sporting equipment and creating a scholarship fund that helps all families afford the quality programs offered at SSDN. SSDN's South Side Day Nursery Learning Center provides early childhood education programs for all children including children with special needs.

Please accept our sincerest thanks to the golfers, corporate sponsors, and volunteers for your generous assistance this year and in all previous years. Without your help, our tournament could not continue to be the sucess it has been for the past sixteen years.

SMRC and SSDN

History of the SMRC Golf Classic

Established in 1991, the Pete Donahue Memorial Golf Tournament is meant to be a tribute, through donations to local charities, to our club's deceased members.

Pete Donahue was a player on Sunday Morning Rugby Club who promoted the idea that as a team we should do some type of fund raiser to give back to the community. During this time the SMRC was still a young club and though everyone new it was a good idea nothing was ever started. Pete past away and this motivated the club to want to do something not only in Pete's honor but also to all those that have played for the team but have passed on. This brought about the formation of the Pete Donahue Memorial Golf Classic and through the dedication of the Original organizers of the tournament (many who still donate their time for this event) and the new players and membership this event has become and continues to be a huge success.

Since the start of the Tournament Sunday Morning Rugby Club has donated over $100,000 to the local community in the name of the SMRC Ruggers who have passed away, a fitting tribute. As a Club we are especially proud of this achievement.
